Shopping for bracelets and watches can be particularly stressful sometimes because we all have very different wrist sizes. So, how do you know which size is right for you? Well, there are several ways to measure and find out, but the material of the bracelet or watch that you’re looking to buy will also affect the size you choose.

If you’re looking to purchase one of these pieces as a gift, it might be a bit trickier to figure out your special someone’s wrist size without getting them suspicious, but it can be done. Here are some tips on measuring your wrist before investing in a gold bracelet.

How to Measure Your Wrist for a Bracelet

What You’ll Need:

  • Tape measure or a ruler. If you own a flexible tape measure like the kind used by tailors, this is the best utensil. You don’t want to use the tape measures made from metal that are stiff and hard to wrap around circular objects, as you won’t get as accurate a reading. If you only own the stiff, hardware tape measure or a ruler, you can use a household item like a piece of string or even a strip of paper to measure your wrist, and then measure the length of the string or paper where you marked it.

Steps to Measuring Your Wrist:

  1. Position your hand correctly. To get the best reading of your wrist’s circumference, you need to reach your arm out slightly and turn your hand so that your palm is facing up (toward the ceiling). Make sure to spread your fingers wide. This will cause your wrist to grow slightly, allowing you to measure it at its largest point.
  2. Now, take your tape measure and simply wrap it around your wrist tightly. Write down the number that you get.
  3. If you’re using the household-object method, you can take your string, paper, or any other flexible object and wrap it tightly around your wrist in the same manner. Mark the area of the object where the two sides meet with a marker or pen.
  4. Use the ruler to get the measurement if you’re using the household-object method.
  5. By using the measurement you got, you can find the best size for your new gold bracelet.

What to Do with Your Wrist Measurement

You might be thinking, “Okay, great. I have the size of my wrist, but how do I use that to order the right size jewelry?” Well, it really depends on what type of piece you’re buying and what materials it’s made from.

If you’re purchasing one of the many Rolex watches for men with a metal strap, you’ll want a slightly more snug fit. The key to getting the right size is to avoid a strap that is so big it’s almost falling off or so small that it’s hurting your wrist. Here’s a little guide you can use, based on the material of the strap:

  • Metal wrist watches and bracelets: Add 1 cm (about ¼ to ½ an inch) of room to your measurement.
  • Leather and rubber straps: Add 2 cm (about ¾ an inch) of room to your measurement.

Other Tips on Measuring for Jewelry

  • Measure width for open loop bracelets. This style of bracelet has a small opening, so that the wearer can easily slide the bracelet on and off. Typically, there is a little bit of wiggle room here, allowing you to pull the bracelet apart and widen the opening. However, you don’t want to do this too often, as it may put pressure on the metal and cause it to break. For these styles of bracelets, it is important to measure the width at the widest point of your wrist (usually where your circular bone pops out).
  • Measure your knuckles for closed bangles. For the ladies, wearing bangles is a fun way to accessorize, but you want to make sure that they are going to fit over your hand—and not slip off. Touch all five of your fingers together and measure around your knuckles to find out if a bangle will be able to fit over your fingers and onto your wrist.
  • Using sizing charts when shopping online. Even when you have the exact measurement of your wrist, it’s not always going to line up with the available sizes. Carefully study the sizing charts (especially when shopping online), to make sure that you find the size closest to your measurements.
